Brett Porigow
Retired NYPD & PAPD Officer | K-9 Special Operations | Peer & Crisis Support Advocate

Brett Porigow is a highly respected retired law enforcement professional whose career reflects a deep commitment not only to public safety, but to meaningful community engagement and officer wellness. His distinguished service spans both the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and the Port Authority Police Department of New York and New Jersey (PAPD).

Brett began his career with the NYPD, serving in patrol, investigations, and community policing assignments. From the outset of his career, he recognized the importance of trust, communication, and visibility in strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve—particularly in high-stress and high-risk environments.

He later joined the PAPD, where he was selected for assignment to the elite K-9 Special Operations Unit. Working alongside his K-9 partner, Brett protected critical transportation infrastructure including airports, bridges, tunnels, seaports, and the World Trade Center complex. In addition to high-level operational responsibilities such as explosive detection, security sweeps, and rapid deployment, Brett consistently used his K-9 role as a platform for public education and positive community interaction. A strong advocate for community outreach, Brett volunteered his time each year with his K-9 partner at the Essex County Crime Prevention Association’s annual Police Expos and Livingston Township National Night Out events. Through these initiatives, he helped foster approachability, transparency, and trust—particularly with families and youth—while reinforcing the vital role of law enforcement in community safety. In addition to his service and outreach efforts, Brett served as a PBA Officer, providing advocacy and peer support to fellow officers. As a World Trade Center (WTC) 9/11 First Responder himself, he has been actively involved in supporting members impacted by the September 11th attacks, as well as officers navigating personal or professional crises. His work includes direct involvement in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), offering guidance, resources, and compassionate peer-based support during critical moments. Recognized throughout his career for professionalism, integrity, and calm leadership under pressure, Brett continues to dedicate himself to strengthening both communities and the professionals who serve them. Today, he remains actively engaged in training, mentoring, and peer support advocacy—ensuring that trust, resilience, and support remain at the foundation of public safety.
